PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene is a thermoplastic polymer with unique characteristics. However, PTFE has low mechanical strength, very low thermal conductivity and a high expansion coefficient. To overcome this weakness, PTFE may be glass-fiber reinforced.
When PTFE is glass-fiber reinforced, its mechanical properties are significantly improved although the chemical and electrical characteristics for which this material is so appreciated remain unchanged. This makes it more resistant to wear and tear and compression. The compound glass-fiber PTFE also remains intact even under the action of acids and oxidation.
The glass fiber load can generally vary between 5% and 40% of the PTFE weight. It can be used for a large variety of application from seals to complex components for aerospace applications.
